INFORMATION:
On occasion of IDEC 2006, we are realising Live Sessions via Internet. Following the motto "democratic education - what's next", IDEC for the first time offers a space for a specific learning topic: in/formal sustainability learning. The aim is, to offer students, educators and parents a variety of rich learning environments, opportunities and instruments for exploring how better societies and futures are possible. Publications, example projects and contacts are to be understood as flowery meadows, gardens and practical tools and communities-in-heart-and-mind that young people can choose, pick up, study, apply, connect and interrelate with. The focus is on project based learning activities that evoke relevant change in the real world - "out there" and "inside us".
The sessions focus on outstanding aspects and projects for sustainability learning. They offer insights into instruments which children and youth develop and apply in self-organised manner - not only to develop their own horizons but for transforming their own world, lifestyle and community in positive ways. Also, examples of a new learning culture in state schools are discussed, and opportunities for cooperation in inter/national projects. Last not least, the common learning for a better world of the young generation across borders of state and alternative schools offers opportunities for a first-hand look at the potentials of the world of democratic learning.
Looking ahead, one aspect becomes very interesting - in how far will young people take up the opportunity to educate and engage themselves for turning their own priority of a better world into reality through collaboration with young people all over the world. Of course, there exist unique potentials in schools that offer young people the freedom to self-organise their learning. And here are also great chances for showing how essential their learning culture and spaces are for human beings as individual and as - more and more locally-globally interdependent - community. Especially because current state school systems demand and advocate Citizenship Education, Peace Education, Ethical Value Learning, Sustainability Learning with growing priority - but hinder their implementation by their basic frameworks.
The organisers of the multimedia sessions are at home in both worlds. IHTEC (Canada) develops holistic curricula for Global Peace and Sustainability Education, and focuses on digital distance training of teaching staff. Positive Nett-Works (Germany) develops instruments that establish access and exchange to precious avantgarde changemaking knowledge - between youth, school, communities, villages, civil society, sciences, the United Nations; - for nurturing and amplifying local and international communication, innovation, cooperation and transformation.
The organisers are also working towards the development of a multimedia conferencing platform that is open and free to use for schools and youth organisations around the world. To overcome widespread investment gaps for group conferencing and travel.
